Michele’s shoulder pain from arthritis was dramatically impacting her quality of life. There were days when she couldn’t reach into her top kitchen cabinets or move the laundry from washer to dryer without extreme pain.

She had hoped that the low impact aquatics work she had been doing in the pool would help ease some of her discomfort, but the pain was so concentrated in her dominant shoulder that she questioned whether she would be able to continue doing the activity that she loved best. She decided it was time to call Greater Orlando Orthopedic Group for help.

Having had a positive experience with the practice sixteen years prior for knee surgery, she knew she could count on the expert orthopedic specialists at Greater Orlando Orthopedic Group.

Orthopedic specialist, Robert Meuret, MD, met with Michelle who put her at ease with the prospect of having another joint replacement surgery. He recommended total reverse shoulder replacement surgery because it generally is a more predictable functional outcome for someone with a compromised rotator cuff and weakness in raising their arm. It allows for other muscles to do the work.

“Dr. Meuret was so incredibly caring and supportive. He took his time explaining the total reverse shoulder procedure and was an incredibly good listener. The staff was also very gracious and kind. At one point they waited 40 minutes after closing for me to come in and pick up a new sling,” says Michele.

In reverse shoulder replacement, the ball implant is attached to the shoulder socket and the socket is placed at the end of the upper arm bone, the reverse of our normal anatomy. This surgery is specifically designed to use the deltoid muscle instead of the torn rotator cuff for overhead lifting of the arm.

Six weeks after the total reverse shoulder surgery Michele has full use of her arm and was back in the pool, doing the thing she loves best.

“Dr. Meuret did such an amazing job with my dominant arm, I went back a year later to address the arthritic pain I was having in my other shoulder,” says Michele. “I couldn’t be happier with Dr. Meuret and recommend him to everyone I know.”
